A London architect bringing contemporary flair to traditional buildings

Pencil and Brick Architects is a RIBA-chartered London architect practice that specialises in creating imaginative private residential and commercial projects. They carry out house extension work, multi-use residential development, and design co-working spaces and high street regeneration projects across the capital.

Urban design: the House with a Slide project at this end-of-terrace mid-Victorian three-storey house involved enlarging a cellar to create sunken living space, with a slide connecting it to the ground floor kitchen.

Good design: contemporary with an eye to the past

Director of Pencil and Brick, Seán McAlister said:

Pencil and Brick is the collective name for our architect practice and our construction company.  An architecture practice, based in East London, we are driven by adventure and passion, and work mostly on private residential and commercially motivated projects in London. In 2019 we incorporated our construction company that builds our design projects. We have six team members and we’re growing.

We’re known for our aesthetic balancing acts between the Victorian niches of London’s homes, and playful contemporary flairs. We often refer to London’s 1800s Sir John Soane’s architecture, and his use of Lumiere Mysterious. We care about playfulness, thoughtfulness. Designing with darkness and simpleness in mind, not just always seeking maximum light or defaulting to open plans.

A stunning four-storey refurbishment

Pencil and Brick Architects were appointed by a private client in Highbury, London, when they had attained planning permission, to carry out the technical design for this amazing four-storey house refurbishment. The project included a variety of complex design challenges such as the detailing of the board-marked concrete, striking new staircases inside and out, a new basement, and refurbishment of every floor. The house is full of natural light and the end result is a beautiful, functional and very stylish home, where good design shines through.

What we like about this London architects practice

Pencil and Brick bring a fresh, sometimes quirky approach to their projects: they are not afraid to introduce statement colour or eye-catching features to the interior design. These London architects are experts at sympathetically reimagining Victorian homes to create spaces that are contemporary yet retain character and avoid blandness.
