London architects: Square Feet Architects

This small team of London architects has a track record of creating inventive yet practical designs and works on projects of varying scales, from individual homes to £20m mixed-use large scale projects.

With the aim of delivering spaces that are beautiful and efficient, since 2003 this RIBA chartered architectural practice has developed expertise in residential projects, commercial projects, and community and education space. These architects take time to develop client relationships and have built links with specialists such as interior designers and craftspeople to help realise projects’ full potential.

This architecture practice offers interior design expertise, as showcased in this beautiful ground floor scheme.

Master plans

Square Feet Architects are based in north west London and work on schemes throughout the city and further afield. They can manage projects through the entire process from feasibility study, planning permission, technical design and construction to completion. Smaller projects are guided by The Square Feet Home Team which helps clients take decisions to make their home the best that it can be, whether radical change is needed or smaller details such as improving the flow between rooms or letting in natural light. The team is adept at urban design and master planning and can offer clients access to a range of trusted experts across central London.

Square Feet Architects has attained planning permission for difficult sites through developing a dialogue with everyone concerned, and a desire to give something back to communities: alongside a belief that architects can make a difference in the physical world, this firm likes to champion local and global causes and fundraise for chosen charities.

Listening and creating

Founder and director Daniel Leon said:

We are developers, entrepreneurs and community activists as well as designers, and collaborate with artists and graphic designers: we like to generate new perspectives. Remarkable places for living and learning should give something back to communities. We listen to everyone concerned and develop a genuine dialogue, winning planning approval for even the most difficult sites.

We’re experts in new and pre-loved buildings and care about our service to you from the feasibility stage to completion, and beyond. We pay attention to what you need, thinking deeply about how to design spaces that are beautiful, efficient and a joy to experience.

Your scheme – be it homes, offices, retail, education or places of worship – will be developed without fuss and with value always in mind. We have curious and playful minds that create the unexpected, collaborating with artists, makers and graphic designers. We don’t do pomposity or run-of-the-mill solutions. We tune in to what you need but add offbeat ideas into the mix. We are pragmatic: we’ll ask you straightforward questions, give you honest answers, and work hard to deliver value for money.

This stylish project involved the regeneration of an old shoe factory

This scheme at Childs Hill in London was completed in 2023. The property had been held in a family portfolio for many years, and Square Feet Architects gained ‘change of use’ permission via a permitted development application. They then applied for a vertical extension of the central block, and devised a scheme for nine units, comprising three mews-type houses and six flats.

Sustainable architecture

Working with the existing brick fabric, the architects proposed new elements in black timber and zinc. The completed development is highly insulated and has excellent environmental credentials.

What we like about this architecture practice:

Square Feet Architects create amazing solutions for schemes of all sizes, from major projects to small improvements to family homes through its dedicated Square Feet Home Team. A diverse portfolio of innovative projects from industrial design to residential work makes this practice stand out from other architecture firms. Building client relationships is important to this firm which can also provide links to specialist craftspeople who can provide the finishing touches to a project.
